West of Scotland in Spring

There are plenty of chances to step out this spring and celebrate the end of the dark and drab winter months! Whether you fancy getting outside into nature or seeking out some entertainment in the city, we have gathered together a few events to look forward to throughout March and into April, happening in the beautiful west of Scotland.

Snowdrop spotting at Greenbank Garden

As part of The Scottish Snowdrop Festival, which highlights the best places across the country for snowdrop spotting, Greenbank Gardens will be inviting local residents to explore the grounds and delight in these dainty flowers – a symbol of the first signs of spring. Wrap up and (hopefully!) enjoy some spring sunshine and a walk in the fresh air to blow away those winter blues. Other spots in the west to enjoy the season’s first snowdrops include Castlemilk Stables, Lochwinnoch Nature Reserve and Finlaystone Country estate – where tubs of flowering snowdrops and posies will be on sale to take home.

Spring at Loch Lomond

As the days start to get longer and warmer, a trip to the Trossachs is in order, whether it’s wrapping up for a spring picnic on the shores of Loch Lomond, exploring Balloch Castle Country Park or a climb up Conic Hill for those feeling fit. Loch Lomond Shores is also worth a visit, hosting a programme of events throughout the year including a regular Farmers’ and Artisan Craft Market, with stall holders selling delicious, fresh and local produce including cheeses, breads, meats, chutneys, veg and handmade gifts. Catch the market on Sunday 4th and Sunday 18th March, 10am – 4pm. Other spring events on the shores include an RSPB ran sunset goose walk on Sunday 4th March, taking a guided woodland walk to the favourite roosting spots for the resident birds.

Glasgow International Comedy Festival

If getting outdoors into nature isn’t really your thing, there is plenty chance to hit the town during March during the Whyte and Mackay Glasgow International Comedy Festival, 8th – 25th March 2018. It’s set to be the biggest and busiest festival yet, with over 500 shows taking place across 54 venues in Glasgow and some of the best in the business visiting the city to perform including Tommy Tiernan, Rob Delaney, Katherine Ryan, Ed Byrne, Bridget Christie, Limmy, David Baddiel, Jerry Sadowitz, Alexei Sayle, Jonathan Pie and Elaine C Smith. As well as stand up performances the festival features plays, sketches, improv, film and comedy for kids, including magicians, rappers and interactive comedy games – all sure to put a spring in your step and a smile on your face after a long Scottish winter.

Paisley Food and Drink Festival

Paisley Food and Drink Festival will return as a two-day event for the first time on Friday and Saturday 27th and 28th April, running alongside Renfrewshire CAMRA’s Paisley Beer Festival from 25 -28 April. It will be a weekend of sampling and savouring, celebrating the best of what Scotland’s larder has to offer via local growers and producers. The full programme for this year’s event is yet to be announced, but last year, foodies were kept satisfied sampling dishes by street food vendors such as Bombay Street Kitchen and Mighty Mexican, with demonstrations by celebrity chefs and workshops for young and old to take part in – plus music and entertainment throughout the weekend! Those who enjoy a tipple can taste from over 300 ales, beers, ciders and wines- cheers to that!
